Communication Arts

Shortly after graduating from Franciscan University, Dan Fillimon landed his dream job—a full-time position with Fox Corporation in Manhattan.

As a content curator for Fox, Dan distributes Fox News and Fox Business primetime programming to their digital platforms. His daily tasks employ various video, photo, and editorial skills, and he is constantly engaging in new creative challenges.

“I get to be hands-on with my passion; editing videos and photos, detailing the news, and more,” Fillimon says.

At Franciscan, Dan developed his passion for communications by working with diverse media beyond the normal course load. From working as a TV lab supervisor and a crew member on the EWTN program Franciscan University Presents, which is taped at Franciscan University, to getting behind the mic on the Franciscan Effect radio station, Dan honed his skills as he strove to share quality content with an audience.

Dan says, “The communication arts faculty at Franciscan understand that constant change is the nature of this profession, so they ensure that students are ready to tackle the unfamiliar.”

He explains that the challenges you face in the classroom form a firm foundation, while a surplus of extracurricular opportunities on campus provide the grit needed for a career in a competitive field.

He credits Franciscan’s Career Services office with helping him select his major and minor courses of study and apply for internships; citing the mock interview as being especially helpful.

Fillimon’s spiritual formation at Franciscan took place on a private level. He formed a connection with Christ both in eucharistic adoration and the Mass, finding peace in silent conversation, and joy in a crowded church.

“Humankind is made in the image and likeness of God; therefore, we inherently seek to create. At Franciscan, I could explore the digital arts to their fullest in Christ!”

When the time came for San Diego native Matthew Tuszynski ’10 to declare his undergraduate major, he first thought about what he loved doing.“I said, well, I love doing video work, so maybe I’ll check out the TV/Radio Department,” he remembers. He also loved his Catholic faith, so he double-majored in Communication Arts (Radio/TV) and Theology.

In the world of multimedia, change is the only constant.  That’s why Emily Fogarty  sees the genius in Dr. Eugene Gan’s approach to teaching media technology at Franciscan University.  “He didn’t focus on learning particular software programs so much as learning how to learn a program. He kept us as current as possible and gave us all the resources to keep ourselves up to date after graduation,” recalls Emily.  She earned a BA in Multimedia Communications with minors in Film Studies and Theology. Emily now runs her own wedding photography business (www.Be-Engaged-Imagery.com) in Providence, Rhode Island.  She was a student in graphic design when Franciscan University first launched the multimedia concentration within Communication Arts.

As a communication arts major concentrating in journalism at Franciscan University, KristiMcDonald had the chance to prepare for her career with hands-on opportunities that cemented her passion for the written word. The first Franciscan student to spend a semester studying at the Washington Journalism Center in Washington, D.C., Kristi held an internship at The Washington Times. “It was the experience of a lifetime to sit in the newsroom of a real newspaper,” she says.At the national and editorial desks and later as a freelancer while still a student, Kristi covered important stories ranging from the Farm Bill to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI’s visit to the nation’s capital, which gave her the chance to interview some of the cardinals.

Journalism — and the Catholic ethos at Franciscan University — prepared Mariann Hughes ’07 for her work as associate director for Advocacy and Outreach for the Maryland Catholic Conference. At Franciscan, I was taught about the dignity of the human person and the value of people. This has helped me see past stories and get at the heart of the people affected by the story.
